The Science Behind Sunlight and Health

Sunlight is much more than just a bright light in the sky. It’s a mix of different light frequencies all of which make up the broad spectrum of light. There is visible light which we associate with what we see.

This enables us to see colour and then there is the non-visible spectrum of light  that we can’t see such as UV, cosmic rays, x-rays, radio waves. Some of the light waves in the non-visible spectrum play a special role in keeping us healthy and well. 

UV Rays: The Vitamin D Makers 

UVB rays from the sun onto our skin are essential  to trigger the synthesis of  vitamin D.. They assist in turning cholesterol into vitamin D, which is essential for strong bones, a healthy immune system, and even a good mood.

UVB light is present when the sun advances beyond 30 degrees from the horizon. Without enough UVB sunlight, we can end up with too little vitamin D. This can lead to weak bones and a weaker immune system.
