Do you wrestle with the nagging feeling that your evening wind-down habit might be leaning more towards self-sabotage than self-care? If these scenarios resonate with you, you are not alone. Many individuals find themselves in what’s known as the ‘grey area’ of drinking, consuming more alcohol than they’d like, but not seeing themselves as classic ‘alcoholics.’

Battling Alcohol Addiction with Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)

Battling alcohol addiction can be a challenging journey, but there are various strategies and tools available to help. One such method that’s gaining traction is the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), noted for its effectiveness in overcoming addiction. The pressing need for effective strategies like EFT is underscored by recent statistics from Roy Morgan’s Alcohol Consumption Report highlighting a concerning rise in alcohol consumption in Australia.

The report reveals that the proportion of Australians consuming alcohol increased by 1.3% points to 67.6% in the year leading up to March 2023. Notably, during pandemic restrictions, consumption of all types of alcoholic beverages, especially ‘ready-to-drink’ (RTD) beverages, reached record highs.

With wine being the most popular drink and a significant rise in spirit consumption, there’s an urgent need for effective methods like EFT to tackle this issue. This blog post will delve into how EFT can empower you to take control and steer your life away from alcohol addiction.

What is Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)?

EFT, commonly known as ‘tapping’, is a form of psychological acupressure. The technique aims to alleviate various psychological and physical symptoms by tapping on specific energy points or meridians in your body.

Derived from traditional Chinese medicine principles, EFT works by calming your amygdala, the stress centre of your brain, and influencing the hippocampus, your brain’s memory centre. By doing so, EFT can aid in reducing negative thoughts, emotional distress, physical pain, and assist in managing addictions and limiting beliefs.

The Urgency to Curb Alcohol Cravings and Drinking

Overconsumption of alcohol is a grave health concern. The addictive nature of alcohol can turn casual drinking into a habitual act, leading to a spectrum of alcohol use often referred to as the ‘grey area’ of drinking. This area lies between heavy alcoholism and occasional drinking.

If you’re in this grey area, you might not fit the stereotype of an alcoholic, but your drinking habits may still pose health risks.

Therefore, finding ways to curb your alcohol cravings and drinking is essential. This process often involves normalising sobriety, making it socially acceptable to opt not to drink alcohol in various situations.

Utilising EFT to Break Free from Alcohol Addiction

EFT can be an incredibly helpful tool for you if you’re seeking to control your alcohol consumption and manage your emotions without resorting to alcohol. It offers an easily accessible, portable technique that can help you handle life’s challenges in a healthier manner.

Here’s how you can apply EFT:

  1. Identify the Issue: Begin by identifying the problem or the issue causing distress. It could be anything from a stressful day at work, anxiety over a future event, or a craving for alcohol.

  2. Tune into Your Body: Acknowledge any physical manifestations of the issue, such as a flutter in your stomach or tightness in your chest.

  3. Rate Your Distress: Assign a numerical value from zero to ten to the intensity of your distress. Zero indicates no stress, and ten signifies extreme stress.

  4. Acknowledge Your Feelings: Vocalise the issue along with an acceptance statement. For example, you might say, “Even though I have a strong craving for alcohol right now, I deeply and completely accept myself.”

  5. Begin Tapping: Start the tapping sequence while repeating your acknowledgment and acceptance statement. The routine typically includes tapping at specific points on your body. How to perform EFT through tapping. – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeTFpn9jTHw&t=337s
  6. Take Deep Breaths: After the routine, take a deep breath in and out. Then, reassess your distress level on a scale of zero to ten.

By providing an alternative to the common stress-relief mechanism of alcohol consumption, EFT can pave the way towards healthier habits and a more positive lifestyle.

Conclusion: Embrace a Healthier Future with EFT

Your journey to sobriety doesn’t mean you’re giving up something; instead, you’re gaining something far more positive. By incorporating the Emotional Freedom Technique into your wellness routine, you pave the way for a healthier lifestyle marked by better sleep, weight management, and overall well-being. Whether you’re dealing with alcohol cravings or other life stressors, it’s time to tap into a healthier version of yourself with EFT.
