Duck-rabbit illusion
The duck-rabbit: one drawing, two animals. Which did you see first?

Duck or rabbit?

Show a room the famous duck-rabbit drawing and hands go up for both. Nobody is wrong. Everyone is just standing somewhere.

Now try that with the colleague who missed a deadline, the manager who sent a short email, or the voice in your own head after a hard week. That's where teams quietly lose trust, energy and goodwill: not in the big conflicts, but in a thousand quick judgments nobody stops to question.

Why perspective is a workplace wellbeing issue

Judgment is fast

We form a view of someone in under a second, through lenses we inherited and rarely check.

It costs teams

Unchecked judgments chip away at trust and collaboration, and leave people feeling unseen. Psychological safety starts with how we see each other.

It costs us, too

The harshest lens is usually the one we turn on ourselves. Self-judgment quietly drains wellbeing, confidence and resilience.

A true story that changes how people see

On New Year's Day at Coogee, Anthony ran into the worst surf he had seen in years to reach an unconscious young man. What happened next, and how long it took him to see that day clearly, sits at the heart of this keynote.

It's honest, often funny, and grounded in lived experience and lifestyle medicine. It's built so audiences laugh early, go quiet in the story, and leave with a practical way to see the whole picture: in their teams, their families and themselves.

"Judgment is seeing half. Seeing the whole is how we start to love it."

What your people walk away with

1

Spot the lens

Notice the moment a judgment forms, and where that lens came from in the first place.

2

Walk around to the other side

A simple habit for seeing a situation from the other person's position before reacting.

3

Accountability without carrying the ocean

Own your actions without taking on what was never yours to carry: a healthier way to handle pressure and self-blame.

4

Three questions to keep

  • What might I be missing?
  • What's the other side of this picture?
  • What part of me is this really about?

Who it's for

  • Leadership teams, planning days and offsites
  • Town halls and whole-of-company events
  • R U OK? Day, Mental Health Month and wellbeing weeks
  • Finance, accounting, IT and software teams
  • Conferences that need a memorable opening or closing keynote
  • Teams working through change, pressure or conflict

About Anthony Hartcher

Anthony is a clinical nutritionist, lifestyle medicine practitioner and science educator with around 30 years of professional experience. He started out as a chemical engineer in the mining services industry before moving into health, earning degrees in health science (nutrition and dietetic medicine) and complementary medicine, with academic excellence awards in both.

He runs me&my wellness in Randwick, hosts the Health Up and Joyful Mate podcasts, presents corporate wellbeing workshops for organisations, and is involved with Coogee Surf Life Saving Club. He and his daughter Sofia were recognised for bravery by Randwick City Council on Australia Day 2026 for the New Year's Day rescue. He brings an engineer's clarity, a practitioner's care and a surf lifesaver's story to every room.

A note for event organisers: this keynote includes a real rescue story that touches on loss and grief. It's told with care and without graphic detail. We recommend sharing your EAP or support details with attendees on the day. The keynote is educational and is not a substitute for professional mental health care.
