The challenge with plant-based diets is the increased calorie intake necessary to meet your protein requirements. It’s a balance we need to master for optimal health. 

Potential Pitfalls and Sustainability of Plant-Based Diets 

Completely restricting certain food groups can often lead to unsustainable patterns and, eventually, diet abandonment. Although plant-based diets are beneficial, they do come with compromises, particularly concerning protein intake.

Animal sources are denser in protein compared to plant-based sources. Hence, you may need to consume more food and carbohydrates to meet your protein requirements, potentially leading to concerns about overeating or a protein deficiency. 

Additionally, not all nutrients in plant-based foods are readily absorbed by our bodies. For instance, iron is plentiful in plants but is not as bioavailable as in meat. For people who might be iron-deficient or suffering from conditions like anaemia, it’s crucial to consider supplementation to meet their nutritional requirements.

When done correctly, plant-based diets can offer significant health benefits, particularly their anti-inflammatory properties, which can help combat ‘inflammaging’ – a combination of inflammation and accelerated aging. However, it’s crucial to ensure that your diet comprises mostly whole foods and minimal  processed foods. 

Cooking Methods and the Importance of Variety in a Plant-Based Diet

Your choice of cooking method can significantly impact the nutritional value of your food. Frying and deep frying can create unhealthy fats (trans fats) and free radicals which accelerate aging, so it’s recommended to minimise such cooking methods. Instead, opt for healthier alternatives like soups or steaming, especially with vegetables. 

Consuming a variety of unprocessed foods, including grains, nuts, seeds, legumes, and a range of fruits and vegetables, is essential for maintaining a balanced diet. Seasonal and locally sourced produce is often the best choice for optimal nutrition and sustainability.
